And don’t have any kids yourself
Date: 2023
Type: Graphic Design, Social Good Campaign
An attempt at blending poetry, design, the environment, and birth control.
While researching the correlation between birth control and the environment, I came across an interesting statistic: not having a child saves about 58.6 tonnes of CO2 per year, almost 25 times more than living car-free and 73 times more than switching to a plant-based diet. This was the trigger for the whole project.
Inspired by the poem “This Be The Verse” by Phillip Larkin, I wanted the focal point of the project to be on “future” and “generation”. The nesting dolls were chosen as a metaphor because of their potential to tell a narrative of contrast and tension between the older, the younger, and the will-be-born.
The graphics are a mix of analog illustrations and digital vectors. With this, each element can embody an organic aesthetic while still being modular and adaptable to different media.
The typeface “Ultra” by Google Fonts was chosen for its serif, which makes it suitable to portray the medium of poetry while being bold with heavy emphasis.
The final part of the project was a 3D sculptural installation. The plant patterns that were used throughout the project were reiterated using paints and clays. The combination of the organic and the industrial, with mass-produced wooden dolls being given new identities through analog materials.
