Jun Nguyen is a graphic designer and illustrator with (a bit of) a diverse background. Coming from an environment as far-away from art and anything creative as possible (think of boring, academic, stuck-up “science nerd”), Jun stumbled onto this world by chance and also by an interest to create and tinker with things. Before pursuing his passion for design, Jun was dabbling in architecture and long before that, physics. Because of this peculiarity, his approach to design and art is a mix of logic and randomness. He begins any design challenge as if it was a scientific question: beginning with a clear concept (thesis) and then strengthening it through research before developing it with sketches and experiments (basically putting it through a grinder). During this process, random insights and inspirations (sometimes brilliant, often time small but significant) started occurring to him, slowly building up and expanding the project until it reached its final form. 

Jun believes that good designs are simple and effective, but never minimal cause then they would stop being memorable. To him, every shape, line, type, and so on should actively communicate a message (while still being aesthetically pleasing) rather than exist only as decorations. Throughout his study and experience, Jun has had the chance to try out many different mediums. While not being truly multi-disciplinary, Jun’s works have (quite) a multi-facet quality, stretching from print to digital to animation. Although not present in every project (as the final solution should fit the intended purpose), he is not shy of mixing the analog and the digital. He finds that the textured and imperfect nature of hand-crafted medium mixes perfectly with the flat and pixel-based technology to become a full-fledged, multi-dimensional existence. Because design is a reflection of humans’ thinking and creativity, and who ever thinks flatly like a cardboard cutout, right?
